Severe Thunderstorm Watch
Détails
An active line of heavy showers and thunderstorms is expected to move across the upper
North Island this afternoon and evening. There is a moderate risk that some of these
thunderstorms may become SEVERE with rainfall intensities of 25 to 40 mm/h, hail 10 to
20mm in diameter and strong wind gusts about Auckland, Waikato and now extending
down in to Waitomo and northern Taumarunui.
Rainfall of this intensity can cause surface and/or flash flooding, especially about low-
lying areas such as streams, rivers or narrow valleys, and may also lead to slips.
Driving conditions will also be hazardous with surface flooding and poor visibility in heavy
rain.
Large hail can cause significant damage to crops, orchards, vines, glasshouses and vehicles, as well as make driving conditions hazardous.
Wind gusts of this strength can cause some structural damage, including trees and power lines, and may make driving hazardous.
Recommandations
Note: A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area. People in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening weather conditions and monitor for possible Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.
