* WHAT...Flooding caused by an ice jam is possible.
* WHERE...Kalskag, Kwethluk, Akiak and Tuluksak
* WHEN...Through Wednesday morning.
* IMPACTS...Ice jams may result in flooding of rivers, creeks,
sloughs, and other low-lying flood prone locations. Water may
impound behind a jam which may cause flooding several miles
upstream.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...
- For Kalskag: As of Monday morning, the River Watch Team
reports that an ice jam is still in place near Lower Kalsgag.
This is causing flooding along Airport Road around the school
and tank farm. Meanwhile, ice downstream of Kalskag through
to the mouth of Bogus Creek remains relatively healthy and
intact. Because of the ice jam upstream and intact ice
downstream, Kalskag faces a heightened flood threat and water
levels could rise beyond where they are this morning.
Residents of Kalskag should remain alert to changes in ice
and water levels.
For Kwethluk: Ice jammed in the lower Kuskokuak channel at
and just upstream of the Y, or confluence with the Akiak
Channel of the Kuskokwim, has resulted in water rising in and
near Kwethluk. River Watch aerial reconnaissance noted water
has already started inundating surrounding low-level areas
near the community. Aerial reconnaissance also noted that
there are several spots of open water in the upper portion of
the Kuskokuak Channel, as well as downstream beyond the Y.
Until the ice shifts or moves, residents should prepare for
continued rising water levels, particularly in flood-prone
lower areas.
Akiak and Tuluksak: Original ice still in place which may
cause flooding as the breakup front moves downstream from
Kalskag.
