Recommendations
People should be in a designated shelter or in a sturdy and
reinforced concrete building to ride out the storm as tropical storm
force winds are occurring and will be increasing through the day. Due
to the size of the storm, tropical storm force winds are expected to
continue through Wednesday night and into Thursday morning for Rota
and Thursday evening for Tinian and Saipan. While recent forecast
tracks continue to favor the center of Sinlaku passing near or over
Tinian and Saipan, typhoon force winds of 74 mph or greater are
still possible for Rota this through tonight. Tinian and Saipan
should prepare for the potential for extensive damage, especially to
non-concrete roofs and buildings.
If staying in a home, turn the refrigerator to maximum cold and keep
it closed. Turn off propane tanks and unplug small appliances. Fill
the bathtub with water in case the tap water becomes unavailable
after the storm. This is for cleaning and flushing purposes. Do not
drink it.
Stay indoors during heavy rain and windy conditions associated with
Super Typhoon Sinlaku. The window of time to complete
preparations for the protection of life and property is very soon
to close. Evacuate if directed to do so by local officials, or if
your home is vulnerable to high winds or flooding. Heed the
advice of your local emergency managers and officials, and
continue to monitor forecasts by your local National Weather
Service office in Tiyan, Guam. Remain in a sturdy shelter until
the "all clear" is given.
.WIND INFORMATION...
Northeasterly tropical storm force winds around 39 mph are expected
to start this afternoon and potentially increasing to typhoon
winds around 75 mph late Wednesday night as Sinlaku passes near
to the west, and winds shift toward the southeast. The size of the
storm and overall storm motion will maintain southeast tropical
storm winds through Friday afternoon as Sinlaku continues on its
accelerated northward trek after exiting the Marianas later in the
week.
.COASTAL INUNDATION AND SURF INFORMATION...
Seas of 20 to 30 feet remain possible, with dangerous surf and
significant coastal inundation and beach erosion possible.
.OTHER STORM EFFECTS...
Heavy, intense rainfall with STY Sinlaku is likely for much of the
week, bringing rainfall amounts of 10 to 13 inches by Friday, with
rainfall amounts upwards of 15 to 25 inches near the center, as
the system crosses the Marianas. The exact track of Sinlaku will
determine where the heaviest rainfall will set up across the
islands.
