Updated at 8.55am to extend watch area.

A very active line of thunderstorms lies over Wellington and southern Kapiti, extending eastwards into Wairarapa. This line should start moving slowly northeastwards, accompanied by very heavy rain, possibly torrential in places.

Very strong wind gusts are also possible, and there is a low risk of small tornadoes.

People are urged to stay alert to these severe weather conditions, with flash flooding likely.

This watch will be updated by 1pm Saturday 17 April, 2026.
